Every farm has its characters. These are ours, introduced the way we introduced them during our first year on the farm.

Meet the residents.

The names came easy. The behavior management did not.

  • Nutella — the smoothie

    Nutella

    Soft, warm-brown, and sweet enough to make you forget the chewing.

  • Slurpee — brain freeze

    Slurpee

    Fast, fizzy, prone to head-butting things that aren’t threats.

  • Bowser — chief mischief officer

    Personality of a labrador with a forklift license. Kappie & Joe’s daily cardio.

  • Tom — head of greenhouse security

    Tom

    Sleek, black, and convinced the greenhouse would fall to ruin without his patrols. Mostly visible at dinnertime, when his commitment to the cause briefly wavers.

    Penelope

    A magnificent ginger cloud with the facial expression of a cat who has filed several complaints. Guards the greenhouse alongside Tom, mainly by sitting near it and judging.

  • The Golden Girls — Blanche, Rose, Dorothy & Sophia

    The Golden Girls

    Four very normal, very loud ducks named after the only logical group of four. Terrible singers, excellent at slugs.

    They walk upright. They look mildly horrified at all times. We have not landed on names yet — they keep moving when we point at them.

  • The Bees — long live the Queen

    Kappie and Joe signed up for a beekeeping class on a whim. We have a hive now. The hive is painted. The Queen approves.

    Black, white, and possibly part raccoon. Had opinions about gates. We lost him in the floods of January 2026.

    Named for the Seahawk, DK Metcalf, and built like him — bigger than physics should allow. We said our goodbyes — see the Farm Stories.

Meet the humans.

The four-leggers get most of the press. Here’s who’s actually doing the work.

    Runs the day-to-day. Knows where every gate latch is and which ones are lying about being closed. Writes the field notes.

    Builds the things, fixes the things, and is single-handedly responsible for Bowser still being on the property.
